Points classement saved in Qatar

In a very tumultuous last stage in Qatar, Cédric Schmarotz saved the Green jersey for the best rider in the points classement. GC-Winner is José Santos Barroeta from SK Blu-Bardhe after a late but successful attack from the peloton.

Cédric was standing proudly on the podim for the winner of the points classement in Doha, Qatar, when a funny looking man, probaly a sheik, presented the Trophy and the final green jersey. Although the sky was cloudy, Schmarotz was sweaty after the very intense stage. A temperature of 27 degrees did the rest. Tim Hamberger was in a similar if not worse condition. He spent the stage in a group after an early attack. At the end he finished fourth, right behind the winner, saving Team FL a top10 result in the general classement. Also the other Team FL riders could present decent stage placements. Usually they would have to work for a sprint, but not today, when the GC victory was out of reach and a big grouped served Cédric's interests. The only one who was really wasted was Wesley Lichtenkiesel, last in the GC, who went to the hotel, tired but happy that the tour is over.

Classics spring starts with a win for the King

In an intense race led by teamroubaix, Stefan "King" Küng wins Omloop Hed Blaad. He defends Pedro Garrido's from 2011 and Guus Nederlof's victory for Team FL in 2010. A good start for Team into the classics spring 2012.

Team FL was expecting a lot today for the first Belgium classic in 2012, Omloop Het Blaad, but for sure not a team Alkworld with logistic and ABC-Polsat with time problems. So, the main opponents were teamroubaix, Mavericks, Pedrocito, Team Suessem, SV Furpach, Team GasGas and the team of Blaue Quellen. NEverthelesse, the Team FL riders were optimistic about the race and the leaders Küng, Hassler and Hole felt good, although some have been reporting seeing Hole at the hotel bar having a dring straight before the race.

Anyway, at 10h it was to late to think about such things as the race started. After a quiet beginning, Wesley Lichtenkiesel checked the riders' strength in a first attempt. In the meantime, a little group was in front of the peloton, trying their luck in an early escape. Unfortunately for them, teamroubaix was feeling strong today and started the chase early. Around 100km later the peloton reached the hard hilly and pavé part of the race. It was still mainly teamroubaix doing work while Team FL and Pedrocito tried to distance the dangerous Blaue Quellen flat staff. The only one staying calm all the time was Mavericks.

The finale startet when teamroubaix attacked with clubucs in the wheel. Now it was Team FL organising the chase with other teams like Suessem or Pedrocito joining later on. The, the crucial attack of Stefan Küng followed at km 194 followed by the most other favorites left in the main group. In the end, "King" Küng won the final sprint with some luck and steps into Pedro Garrido's and Guus Nederlof's shoes.

Gaudenz starts with a victory at PN

Gaudenz Taverna wins the Stage one at PN (ITT) for Team FL and will wear yellow tomorrow. It was the first race win for the Schaffhausner time-fighter.

Traditionally, Team FL participates at the famous stage race Price - Nice. And the plan is clear: Gaudenz should win stage one of Parice-Nice, a ITT, and wear yellow as long as possible. So far so good, Gaudenz showe dhis skills and left all his opponents behind him. A good place for his first career win. Anyway, Gaudenz will not play a big role in the fight for the GC. Thus, GC captain will be Nathaniel Biedermann. Tomorrow will be a flat stage, where Jean Ollé Ollé should show his big smile after a good sprint. Hopefully. Until then, Gaudenz ist the most proud Schaffhausner for today.

Nate does great

Nathaniel "Nate" Biedermann one stage 6 at Paris - Nice. It was the first race win in his career. Two stages more are to go until Nice and Team FL can already celebrate a succesfull participation.

He ist only known as the quiet one among the other team members. Nathaniel "Nate" Biederman does not talk very much and does not like to be the story of the day. Nevertheless he seemed very happy, when he won stage 6 for Parice-Nice today and could celebrate his first career win ever, after riding so many times for other Team FL riders or beeing beaten just by seconds. Although being quiet, or perhaps escpecially because of not losing too many words of nonsense, the other team members celebrated Nate's win enthusiasticly. Now, he is also in a good position to finish the tour on a top20-GC-position, the last goal to achieve in an already very successful tour for Team FL.

Unconsciously to red

Paris - Nice is over and Team FL achieved everything planned. And even more. Pretty much unconsciously, Wesley Lichtenkiesel won the mountain classement and helped the team to a successful finish of the tour.

Traditionally, Team FL started at Paris - Nice, one of the early highlights early in the year. Without a climber, the team was clearly focused on stage wins and some days in yellow for timetrialist Gaudenz Taverna, as this years edition startet with a short TT. Nevertheless, in the GC Nathaniel Biedermann and Hugo Marxer should do their best for a top20-placement.

March 4th: The tour started well for Team FL (rhyme!). Gaudenz won the TT and was wearing yellow, white and green. Second stage then was a chance for Jean Ollé Ollé in the sprint. Together with Woddeltown Team and Ape-, uhmm Alkword, he smiled himself on place two, Gaudenz still in yellow. Stage 3 was the start of the Alkshow with Cervantes. As expected, Miguel won the stage while Xaver Unsinn got third, Gaudenz still in yellow. But the start of the Alkshow was already its finish too. The next stage, Tatsuki Nasawa could outsmart the Alktrain and won stage 4 with Cervantes taking over yellow from Gaudenz. Stage 5 was a climbers issue and Abraham Olano from Astana backed this up, while tour favorite Jinichi Nasawa was now wearing yellow. Stage 6 was again a nice day for Team FL: Nathaniel Biedermann won the stage in a late solo attack out of a group of classic riders around Alkworld's Cervantes. Stage 7, Team FL had apish help and thus was obviously riding for Hugo Marxer now. In the end, Marxer got some seconds for the GC. In the meantime, Tim Hamberger got second in the three man group in front after an early escape. More important and very surprising, Wesley Lichtenkiesel won the mountain classeement one point in front of Mikel Shera without really knowing it. Funny fact: he was the fourth worst mountain rider in the whole peloton.

Finally, Paris - Nice was succesfull in any way for Team FL. Nate and Hugo got their top20 GC-placement, Wesley won red, Gaudenz could present yellow for three days and Team FL won two stages. Anyway, it seems that this cost lots of power as the team management discovered after the training today. Thus, the following month will be for restructuring Team FL a bit, especially when April and the classic sprint is over. Until then, we are eagerly await race number 1000 for Team FL.

Oldie but goldie

Tim Hambergers wins his first race today at the age of 36. At the Profronde van Drenthe, he finished first in a four man group including old flat-mate Fred Colon who got third.

One day after Paris - Nice at the Profronde van Drenthe, especially the old ones were as motivated and fit as ever. While everybody was watching Sabato or Bozovic from Alkworld and SM Team, it were 34 and 36 years old Fred Colon and Tim Hamberger who decided the race with their attack. Together with two Alkworld riders, they finished in front of their chasers. In a close sprint, Tim was the luckiest and could celebrate his first career win after getting third at last years Infer du Nord. Colon got third and completed the good team result that was completed by Harry Hole and Stefan Küng also beeing among the top10. In the main group, Xaver Unsinn got fifth, 15th in total. Now Team FL is looking for young blood on the transfer market although Fred and Tim seem not tired of riding yet. At least the will be able to join race No. 1000 for Team FL that will take place tomorrow in Pristina, most probably.

Hugo Marxer leaves furiously

Hugo Marxer quits cycling for good and leaves Team FL with ambivalent feelings. After 161 races, 2'619 eternal points and his victory at Piemonte in 2011, he has enough of beeing just helper for others.

Hugo was not only fed up, he was furious after Milano - San Remo this year. He felt good before the race, he knew he could win. Petit Singe's team manager told him so. Anyway, Hugo was frequently consulting the part chinese-swiss cycling team after the Giro in 2011. During the same time, his attitude changed from being a humble helper for the team to an almost narcistic wanna-be superstar. His confidence grew and he claimed more than just riding for - in his opinion - no names like Schmarotz or Biedermann.

Consequently, the events around the Classicissima were the last straw in a chain of frustrating moments for the Liechtenstein hill specialist. His hope was crushed when the team management decided after Lemanie to ride for Schmarotz and called proud Hugo back to get the sprinters in front again. Although finishing the race professionally and helping Schmarotz to a 2nd place, only millimeters from victory, he smashed his bike into the team car and called the race chef something we do not want to repeat here.

Then this morning, he visited the team headquarters, went straight the the team chef's office, laid down a paper with his resignation message and left, smashing the door behind him quite hard. So far, nobody around Team FL knows where he went afterwards, rumour has it he took a flight to Shanghai. But so far nothing is confirmed. Team FL reacted immediatly and engaged a young rider for the upcoming month. He will be presented later in April. So far, we wish Hugo a nice journey to whereever he may find peace with himself.

King Küng makes the 100 full

At de Panne, Stefan "King" Küng wins the 2nd stage and is now wearing the yellow GC-leader's jersey. After Schmarotz missed it at MSR, King Küng complets with his victory the 100 race wins of Team FL.

Finally it's done. After Team FL reached 1'000 races this month, it can also pronounce its 100th race win. It was Stefan "King" Küng who won the decisive race, the 2nd stage of de Panne. Consequently and because of the bonus seconds in the end, he is currently wearing the yellow jersey, at least for the first half stage tomorrow. Nevertheless, he will most probably not be able to defend it until the end of the tour, as Cervantes and Kozlov are waiting only seconds behind him with much better TT-Skills for the last stage. For tomorrow, Team FL counts on Jean Ollé Ollé for a sprint and on Gaudenz Taverna for the TT. Anyway, with this result today and this milestone, it is already a successful tour in a successful month for Team FL.

A stone pounding cyclist

The classic spring did not work out the way Team FL wanted so far. Consequently, a new promising talent for these kind of races was hired: Kari Steinsson from Iceland.

In the far north of Europe, in Iceland, Team FL found its new cycling talent. More precisely, the scouts found him in Skagafjörður (north-west), even more precisely around the settlement of Sauðárkrókur. The surrounding of his hometown is formed by the fjords and the vulcanos and made of, well, lots of stone. Thus, Kari Steinsson used to ride his bike already in his early years on either slippery or difficult road conditions, even lava stone or gravel. Luckily for Team FL, this lead to a very promising Pavé-cyclist who is now cycling in Liechtenstein to improve the pavé-results after a not satisfying spring 2012 so far. Besides his special ability, he will of course help the team during flat races and short tours. Anyway, Team FL is sure to have made a great deal with Kari. Just because it looks very promising, here are his stats:

After Kari also Arni at Team FL

Team FL decided to hire not only Kari Steinsson, but also his twin brother Arni. The Liechtenstein cycling team sealed the deal today and will present the riding brother at Cerami for the first time.

His first days in Liechtenstein were groundbreaking for Kari Steinsson. He liked the mountains, the rhine river and the sunny hours. So he told the team management hat his twin brother, Arni, also would like to join Team FL. He convinced youth scout Larry Eriksson and so, Team FL is in the position to present the Steinsson brothers today at the GP Cerami. Although family relations among rider are nothing new for team FL, Kari and Arni are the frist twin brothers joining the roster. In general, both will be focus on the classics spring 2013 but also on pavé races before. The team management is sure that they will be a good asset for flat and maybe hilly races too. Finally, Arni's details:

April before May... what?!

As if there would have been a gap between March and May, Team FL left out any good result during the last month (which month?). And as soon as May starts, Toni Hassler brings back success with his victory at the hilly pavé-race from Panygroes to the Crymlyn Highlands.

Team FL is not the team with the most victories, but usually, one or two each month may be, as a rule. Well, this was not the case in April (which month?). No victories at the famous spring classics, no victories at the Tour de Romandie, no decent GC placement. Just crap. crappy crap. Team FL will remember April 2012 (if at all) as a fucking frustrating and crappy month.

Anyway, May started in the meantime. May was always a good month for Team FL. Giro d'Italia month. But this year, it will be different. No Giro, no Italian pleasures. Just "Baycalikerque". And some one day races.

One day races like today, from Panygroes to the Crymlyn Highlands, right before Dunkerque. A good race to show that Hassler, Biedermann, Küng and their mates still know how to ride hilly pavé-races, after only succeeding at Omloop in the sprint classics time. And, well, what to say, success is back with the name of Toni Hassler! The old man (already 33) beat everybody, even mighty Alkworld, ABC, ELITE, TUTTIFRUTTI, AlmavivaItalia and of course unbeatable and a "must-mention" Team ART. And others.

Thus, Team FL is happy again, even having found a new job for Takashi after designing SV Fuprach's very nice jerseys. Almavivaitalia ask for a new design and offers a new set of brushes for the Japanese artist. Takashi is happy to take over and will give his best, now that he vomit out everything that could be in the way for a good job...

Team classement at Dunkerque

While a stage win or a victory in the other classements was denied, Team FL could at least win the team classement at Dunkerque. The Liechtenstein cycling team tries for the first time the side programm, because a participation at the Giro is not possible this year.

Three second places during the stages, two times Schmarotz and once Hassler, and a second place in the GC by Hassler. This was the result for Team FL for Dunkerque 2012. Well, winning the team classement has to be mentioned. And the nice amount of money on the Team FL account after a very "dry" April. But so far, it was a good beginning for the May season. And at least, Hassler could beat Otero once before Dunkerque. The next big stop for Team FL will be the Tour of Califorania, where Gaudenz Taverna can show some of his skills. Until then, there are some one day races on the way and perhaps a decent rider on the transfer market.

Schmarotz for the last time

In his last race, Cédric Schmarotz celebrates his 13th race win (on a friday...) at the GP Gulbene. With 36 years, he decided to retire from cycling and leave his place for younger riders. He will be remembered as the rider with the most race wins in the history of Team FL

“I remember as if it was yesterday: Cédric, this young cyclist, enters the team cabin and says ‘hello’ in his typical dialect from Biel. And everybody thought: Oh no…” (Tim Hamberger, former Team FL rider)

Usually, this was the main reaction when people – especially opponents in sprint races – met Cédric. Riders like Lelay, Conti and other famous riders made this special experience with their special Swiss “colleague”.

Nevertheless, Cédric had a certain charisma that made others work for his own success. How else could it happened that he is the Team FL rider with the most race wins ever. 13 times he finished a race first and gained 2 points jerseys during his career. He could win stages at the Giro and the Tour de France in 2011 and finished second at the Classicissima 2012. Finally, he collected 6'433 eternal points.

So the question arises what Schmarotz will do in his future. Rumour has it that he will hire as a diving coach at the diving school Atlantis in Biel as he recently bought a house in his home town next to the Lake Biel. Whatever it may be, the team management wishes him good luck and thanks him for all the victories. Last but not least, here are the main facts about Cédric Schmarotz:

- Image Cédric Schmarotz, 36, Sprinter

The little monster follows Schmarotz

After Cédric Schmarotz retired from cycling, his teammate Belgian Wesley Lichtenkiesel decided to quit too. Lichtenkiesel who was known as little monster rode more than 250 races for Team FL during his career.

He was never known as a big cycling talent. Unknown as he was, He was even shown as Lichtenstein rider first before the listed him as Belgian rider, coming from an outskirt of Eupen.

Wesley worked hard, harder than the most other riders. From odd perspective he made it to a respectable flat rider and helper in then Liechtenstein cycling team. Besides his technical skills, his most outstanding skill was perhaps his fighting spirit. Never give up, never surrender. Well, people say that this is a saying from a Hollywood movie, but it fits perfectly for Wesley. And that's also why his team mates called him monster. Besides his belgian roots and other stories in his home country...

Wesley quit cycling with 35 and is considered as the rider with the most races for Team FL. 262 is the number. In most of the races he was helper, worker, companion of Cédric Schmarotz. But he also had his highlights, like winning a stage at the Sachsen Pavés 2012 or winning the mountain (!!!) jersey at Paris-Nice also this year. With 512 eternal points, he won't be remembered as the rider with the best results at Team FL, but for sure he will be remembered for his attitude and his loyalty. Thus, finally, his stats:

- Image Wesley Lichtenkiesel, 32, Helper/Flat specialist

Best skills: 46-86-78-46-47, Pavé 75, Reg 52

Bought: 01.03.2011
Retired: 11.05.2012
Races: 262
Race wins: 1
Mountain jerseys: 1
Eternal points: 512
