Second half of March ruled by crazy little guys

Despite all the rumours, crazy little guys do exist in the head of the Team FL management. Only thing is, they are neither paid nor wanted and still influence race results, like in the second half of March.

Sore throat, spitting blood, neck like a bull: sounds like the result of RVV. In fact it was mainly done by some stupid crazy little guys you can't even see. Unfortunately they are not paid by Team FL and still they try to stay on board stubbornly. Thus, Team FL decided to ignore them and still ride the second half of March like planned. What the team management haven't known before: The whole Team FL was infected. Thus, the Dwars door Vlaanderen as well as E3 Harelbeke could not have been finished. Especially MSR winner Stefano Benni was sad about that, but anyway, the race calender went on. So, Team FL participated at De Panne and was very pleased with the results. Although the FL riders could not celebrate a stage win, Kari Steinsson won the GC by one second; a good sign for the upcoming Vlaanderens Mooiste. Anyway, short before the last stage, the crazy little guys stepped in again. At least this time, all FLs were able to finish the race but still, the big goal for the second half, RVV, seemed to get out of sight. On sunday then, The team management sat together with Hugo Marxer to discuss everything. In the end, Arni Steinsson could reach the 3rd place while Stefano Benni got second in the main group, 5th overall. Now, Team FL hopes that the crazy little guys will leave soon so everything looks good for the April classics.

Kari gathers Scheldeprijs

Surprisingly, Kari won his first classic race before Sunday. At the Scheldeprijs, he was the first to cross the finish line after a great attack on the last Pavé sector out of a late group.

Like at MSR, Team FL was riding again with a two option strategy in a classic race, one of them being Jean Ollé Ollé. Unlike MSR, the second option was Kari Steinsson, Team FL's leader for Pavé races. Although the Scheldeprijs is well known as a sprinters race, Hugo Marxer pointed out the advantages to have "two irons in the fire". And in the end he showed to be right again, as almost every times. The curcial point during the race was the double attack by RV Allagen, when the Peloton was not paying attention on Mauro Corradino and Sürkü Pehlivan, its young Pavé-Combo. Well, Kari did and so did Team Grifos 70 Sprint Pavé rider. Hugo Marxer reacted quickly and gave the team the sign to chase the group and pressure the sprint strong riders in there. On the last pavé part, Kari used the power he saved and attacked. As nobody else was able to follow the icelantic pavé specialist, Kari was riding alone on the last 7 km towards the finish. He even saved 6 seconds to the rest of the group and 7 seconds to the peloton, including Jean Ollé Ollé and Joe Friesenbichler who where more already celebrating that sprinting. Kari's victory is a good sign for Sunday and takes away some pressure, also from RVV third Arni. The rest of the week well be more or less meaningless one day races while Hugo Marxer is already investigating the PR route and planning the Team FL tactic...

Kari delievers big time in Roubaix

The Schelde win was a surprise, the win at Paris-Roubaix was expected. Kari Steinsson did, what he and his twin brother Arni have been hired: He followed Gilles Braas as winner of the Hell of the north.

The race began as expected. A group of six riders attacked early in the race, trying to survive the 27 cobble sectors in front of the favorits. Team FL and the Steinssons were waiting in the Peloton seeing Mavericks and Scilo, the two specialised Pavé-teams working at first, keeping the group on the long leash. Around km 130, Team FL joined forces and until the end, the three teams cooperated well. The decisive point was the sector Le Carrefour de l'Arbre, where the favorites tried to get rid of as many riders as possible. at the end of the second last pavé sector, the Steinssons both attacked togehter, letting all but the Scilo and Mavericks leader behind them. Fitzpatrick from TT Sports was also following Arni who then got the order to let the three man group around Kari go. In the end, the three caught the group from the beginning, while Arni and Fitzpatrick were riding around 10 seconds behind them. In the Vélodrome of Roubaix, Kari played out his sprint strength and outsmarted his opponents for the victory. He is the second Team FL rider to win Paris - Roubaix after Gilles Braas in 2011, his second classic victory in one week.

Benni starts with a win in the Ardennes

With the Brabantse Pijl, Stefano Benni wins the "final rehearsal" fot the upcoming three Ardennes classics, AGR, la Fleche Wallonne and finally LBL.

Stefano Benni can not only win Monuments. He's also able to win half-classics like the Brabantse Pijl today. After a very fast and hard race in which Arni Steinsson was the main actor for Team FL in a 5 rider group for the biggest part of the race, Benni attacked at the second last km, a 4% climb. On the final km, he could defend two seconds against the chasing sprinter teams and won the race solo. While in front, Team FL could celebrate the victory, in the back, there was an exhausted Jean Ollé Ollé, who seems to get old and could not keep up anymore with the best. Nevertheless, as we know him, Jean smiled like in his best days when he heard that Benni won the race. Now the team prepares for the three Ardennes classic race AGR, La Fleche Wallonne and most importantly: LBL, la Doyenne. Hugo Marxer is quite busy again. For distraction purposes and some calming down, Team FL will participate at the GP de Denain tomorrow, giving Ollé Ollé another chance to show that he's still able to reach the finish in the main group.

TEAM FL SHORTNEWS:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

15 April 13: Benni wins again, Kari misses Tro Bro Leon victory

Instead of AGR, Stefano Benni wins another race two days after the Brabantse Pijl. In the meantime, Kari misses another victory on Pavé at Tro Bro Leon by 1 second. Next classics chances will be La Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday and LBL on Sunday. While for the Fleche, Team FL is a clear underdog, the Liechtenstein cycling team hopes for a good day at La Doyenne.

TEAM FL SHORTNEWS:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

26 April 13: Benni wins stages but only 2nd at LBL.

By an inch, Stefano Benni missed the Victory at La Doyenne to Pieter McLeod. Instead, he won the race before LBL and the first stage of the Tour de Romandie, his 15th career win. At the second stage he arrived in the front group but missed the sprint due to a technical defect. Unfortunately, he lost the green jersey and lost the chance for the stage and yellow.

Benni on top after Romandie

Two stages at the Tour de Romandie including the win of the points classement have lifted Stefano Benni at the top place of the RSF/C4F riders' ranking. Besides his achievements, also the win of the team classement has been celebrated.

Image

The Team FL riders were quite happy the Tour de Romandie is over. One rider was especially happy: Stefano Benni. He sat in front of his laptop for a long time, looking at the table for the rider's ranking. What he saw also pleased the team management and his team mates, who worked for it too. The all saw and have been seeing since then Stefano Benni on top of it, being No. 1. Although his technical defect during stage 3, the Tour de Romandie made it happen. Two stage wins and the points classement - the 5th already for Benni - sealed the pole position. As a special gift for the rest of the team, including the climbers Roy and Eddie who did a good job too, the team classement was theirs too. A good finish of April and a good sign for the upcoming Giro d'Italia. Team FL already assigned Hugo Marxer to check profiles and strategies to be able to present a well prepared team for the big highlight.

First Italian victory at the Giro 14h

Stefano Benni wins stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia at 14h and breaks Jolien Maréchal's (Gaurain Rx) winning strike. After all, it's also the first Italian victory at the Giro 14h, hopefully many more to come.

Until yesterday, everything was just introduction or small talk for Team FL. A sprinter's stage, the TTT and a stage made for Maréchal. Well, yesterday's stage was made for Stefano Benni. And Team FL worked for him sacrificially. After a period of GC controlling by Titi Wansy from r Quick, first Büchel took over, followed by Kowalski and Banzer, all trying to keep the well cooperating group in front of the peloton withing reach for the finale. Shortly before the last and descisive climb, Fargas and Flachbart kept the peloton together while Antiga managed to shorten the gap to the group the first km of the climb. Then it was Petit Singe who left the first exclamation mark with a double attack performed by Trapani and Momyshuly. Immediatly the GC teams were alarmed and r Quick took over in the group with the GC favorites while Lichtenstein and Sixpence waited for Benni and pulled him up the climb. With a gap of 15' on top of it, Benni only had to catch the group in front of the three Team FL riders, keep the distance to the Maréchal group and attack at the last km. Only one to follow was Mattsson who could not cause difficulties for Benni in the sprint. That's it. Really. Yay.

And welcome Arunas!

While 9 Team FL riders are performing well in Italy, the team management welcomes Arunas Paulauskas from Lithuania as newest rider. Arunas will prepare himself for helping issues in the after Giro 2013 era, also able to keep up on pavé during the spring season 2014. Straight from Vilnius, Arunas was souted by Hugo Marxer at the Liechtenstein race Rund um den Eschnerberg last year and has been immediatly contacted by the tactic genius from Eschen. Not thinking twice about joining the Liechtenstein cycling team, Arunas took the next flight to Zurich, train to Sargas, Bus to Vaduz and, well, he was here. And now the team has to deal with this skills 8after the May 5th):

Benni in pink

For at least one day, until the ITT is over, Stefano Benni will wear the Maglia Rosa after his second stage win at the Giro d'Italia

Stefano Benni is, as far as the team management knows, the first rider for Team FL ever to wear the Maglia Rosa. After his second stage win yesterday, Benni had enough bonifications to take the jersey home with him, as well as the leading place in the points classement. The leader's jersey is also a sign for the rest of the time who worked hard again for the stage win. Today in the ITT most of the team has the possibility to do some comfy riding for tomorrow's stage, where Benni will be again one of the main favorite before the rest day on Monday. Thus, the first week of the Giro went as planned, two stage wins, both for Benni, and the Maglia Rossa.

Ciao Giro 2013

The Giro d'Italia 2013 is over. Four stage wins and the Maglia Rossa were the outcomes for Team FL. It could have been worse, but it also could have been better. Nevertheless, the team management is happy and welcomes the nine rider back in Vaduz with a nice afterraceparty.

It's done, Ciao Giro 2013. And as it's time to take stock of it, the team management's eyes tend to have a look at the general classement first. As usual, this is a quite a quick look. 8th and 9th. Hmm... As expected, quite average, mostly due to passivity during the mountain stages and a very much rubbish like mountain time trial. Thus, the next look goes for the other classements: Moutain, nope, nothing. Youth classement? Nah, Flachbart not the guy to win it, Sixpence one year too old. Team classement? stupid mountain time trial, grmpf. Points classement? Yay, finally! Thanks for that hint. The Maglia Rossa was one of the main goals during the Giro 2013. Selected rider to win it was of course Stefano Benni, although without the very aged Xaver Unsinn as support. Anyway, it worked out! Yay again. Stefano Benni won the red jersey of the best rider in the points classement with two stage wins (4 and 7) and lots of good placements. Of course, more stage wins could have been possible, that's the only downside to it. But if Benni does not work, there are eight other riders who might jump in. Well, during this Giro, it was Victor Fargas, who one stage 17 and 21 out of an escape group. The others simply were too busy with helping stuff, unlucky or just too passive, like Roy and Eddie. But after all, the Giro was fun nad can be labelled as success for the Team FL. Yay (the third).

Hey Joe

Auf jeden Fall: You better belive it right now! I gotta go now! Hey, hey, hey Joe.

Baltic invasion at Team FL

It has begun with Arunas Palauskas from Lithuenia, it goes on with Janis Smedins from Latvia and maybe ends with Martti Rosenblatt from Estland: The Baltic invasion at Team FL. In the meantime, Arni Steinsson, Xaver Unsinn and Jean Ollé Ollé have retired.

22 stage wins, lots of podiums at classics and even more great memories: That’s what Arni Steinsson, Xaver Unsinn and Jean Ollé Ollé left when they retired from professional cycling. They also left a twin brother, the second part of the congenial duo Bennsinn and an epic smile.

While Arni stays with his brother Kari in Liechtenstein being his manager, Xaver Unsinn goes back to Germany to start a new career in Ice Hockey. Jean Ollé Ollé stays in Liechtenstein too, he will be the new head of the sprint department, assisting Hugo Marxer in tactical work and will be responsible for the Team FL corporate identity building.

Finally, their stats are presented:

- Image Arni Steinsson, 35, Pavé Specialist

Best Skills: 55-85-78-56-51, 84.1 Pavé, 38 Reg
Bought: 05.04.2012

Bought: 01.01.2012
Retired: 31.05.2013
Races: 206

New Baltic Trio in town

While three FL riders retired, two more joined the Liechtenstein cycling team. While Arunas Paulauskas from Lithuenia has already been a team member since May, in June, Janis Sme-dins from Latvia and Martti Rosenblatt from Estland are the latest assets from the Baltic states. While Martti will be a sprint helper mainly, Janis Smedins will be prepared for the classic sprint 2014. Although his weakness in sprint, the Team FL management believes that he can do a good effort for more glory. Maybe he will get a lad for doing so in the near fu-ture. Anyway, Team FL proudly presents their abilities:

- Image Janis Smedins, 21, Pavé Specialist

Benni wins in Switzerland too.

At the Tour de Suisse, Stefano Benni wins the 4th stage from Meiringen to Buochs and heads for another win of a points classement. Roy Lichtenstein got 3rd and completed a great team result while Eddie Sixpence is still in yellow.

The 174 km from Meiringen to Buochs were not really flat, but still a chance for the best sprinters in the peloton to go for a bunch sprint. Unfortunately, the team with the best sprinter, Team Suessem, used his riders the day before for an escape and therefore was not attending with full strength. Hence, in the end of the race, it was mainly Stefano Benni against Abel Tasman from Petit Singe. With the better train and a clever tactic, Benni won the sprint quite easily in front of his biggest opponent. Benni's lead-out sprinter, Roy Lichtenstein, even got 3rd, while the rest of the team headed for good placements too. In the meantime, Eddie Sixpence still wears the yellow leader's jersey. He will lose it in the final ITT most probably, but the team will try everthing that he can keep it at least until there.

Glory Li(e)chtenstein

The Tour de Suisse ended on Sunday with the final individual time trial, Eddie Sixpence's 3rd GC place and the win of the team classement. The day before, Roy Lichtenstein won the stage the lead through Liechtenstein to Bad Ragaz.

The Team management was prepared: On Saturday, Hugo Marxer was sitting in the team car (next to a mysterious stranger who wasconstantly giving orders) and leading the team from the Gravonian mountains via Chur and Sargans to Liechtenstein. The rest of the team management was awaiting the "Tourtross" and the riders to pass by their headquarters in Triesen. They were pleased of what the could watch, and especially of what happened afterwards when Roy Lichtenstein won the final sprint in Bad Ragaz. It was the second Team FL stage win. And Eddie Sixpence was able to wear the yellow leader's jersey also on the last day of the tour.

The final time trial then cost Eddie the leading position in the General Classement. At least, he could defend a podium place and got overal third. More pleasing was the win in the team classement, already the fourth this year. Unfortunately, Stefano Benni was not able to win the Points classement, mainly due to the two time trials and the mountain stages, where he collected too little points. After all, the Tour de Suisse 2013 was a bit disappointing. Not enough competitive teams, not enough teams on the whole, a multi winning the tour... At least it was worth some points and money.

Joe breaks the curse in France

After two weeks at the TdF'13, Team FL exchanged its clean sheet with a stage win. Joe Friesenbichler won the bunch sprint in stage 13 from Tours to Saint-Amand-Montrond.

Team FL and escpecially Hugo Marxer were clueless: No stage win after 12 stages of the Tour de France 2013. The Giro would have already offered two after the same amount of stages. Then, finally, at stage 13 (what a coincidence, must be the lucky number), Joe Friesenbichler delivered. The FL sprint train with Benni, Rosenblatt and Joe worked well while the other sprinters did not pay enough attention. Nicy. While our sprinter seems to do what he's in the line-up for, the rest of the team still has potential to show more than they've done so far. While neither Sixpence nor Lichtenstein could succed during the past mountain stages, also Stefano Benni still has a "0" at his score sheet. At the Mont Ventous, Fargas almost made it. Anyway, today is the second rest day with the last week to follow. Lot's of mountains and one last sprint. Team FL will try to increase the score and make this Tour end happily. Hopefully.

Au revoir Paris

The Tour de France is over and Team FL is back in the one day race business. After two stage wins and the 4th place in the GC, the LIechtenstein cycling team tries now to find its way for the upcoming challenges.

It took more than one week for the first enjoyable moment for the Team FL, when Joe Friesenbichler won stage 13 in a bunch sprint. At the end of the tour also the climbers showed their potential. Eddie Sixpence could win stage 19 and in the last stage up the Champs Elysées, Tomasz Kowalski almost made it three. In the General Classement Eddie and Roy Lichtenstein gathered both top 10 placements, Eddie even scratching at the podium, missing it by about a minute. But that would also be the résumé of the Tour. Being there, but always missing success by an inch or two. Anyway, the Tour is there to be ridden, despite the participation was questionable, esp. financially. Now the team management has to look forward to the second part of the race season 2013 and already forward to spring 2014. Some riders are already in the last days of their career. Thus it means to get active again searching for new riders, hungry for success, or at least a special sense of humour to join Team FL. The future will show if they are able to succeed riders like Kari Steinsson or Stefano Benni.

Victor wins for Kari and Walter

Victor Fargas wins the Circuito de Getxo after a very busy race. It's the first Team FL victory after the Tour de France. At the same time, Kari Steinsson and Walter Walch retire from professional cycling.

While riders like Kari Steinsson and Stefano Benni get older and even retire, the young guns have to look for victories now. Although Victor Fargas is also not the youngest rider anymore, he still is in his prime and able to win a race. He showed that today again and won the Circuito de Getxo after a succesful attack around 15km before the finish line together with Henri Bienvenu. At the last km, no other rider in the escape group could follow his final attack anymore while Henri Bienvenu secured the third place in the back. Out of the main group, Stefano Benni also made a good attempt worth another top10 placement for Team FL. Besides Fargas' victory, two other news have to be told from Team FL, rather sad ones: Kari Steinsson and Walter Walch left the team and retired from cycling. Victor Fargas told in the winners interview that he dedicates his victory two his former team mates.

Kari Steinsson was hired together with his twin brother Arni, who was his manager too for the last two seasons of his career. Both came from a little town in the rough north of Iceland and fully enjoyed the beautiful little country in the heart of Europe as well as their possitiblites they were given for Pavé races. And they paid back this trust. Kari did not only win five races, two stage races (Sachsen Pavés and De Panne) and one points classement, he also won Paris Roubaix in 2013 after winning the Scheldeprijs. Now he will focus on his career after cycling, which will be next to his brother Arni. They both decided to stay in Liechtenstein and help the team for the cobble-sector. Besides that, they will both start to work at the quarry in Balzers for the Werner Büchel AG, a remote relative of Hannes and Benni Büchel.

- Image Kari Steinsson, 36, Pavé Specialist

Best Skills: 59-87-51-59-50, 85.3 Pavé, 41 Reg
Bought: 01.04.2012
Retired: 31.07.2013
Races: 80
Race wins: 5 (incl. P-R and Scheldeprijs 2013)
Stage races: 2
Points classements: 1
Eternal points: 4818

When Walter Walch joined the Team FL at the age of 21, he already was well experienced in life, having already three children. He had a solid moral conduct and solid he worked for the team. Never looking for his personal achievements during his 208 race;, he was always racing for the Team FL family. Well appreciated by the team leaders like Benni, Ollé Olléa and the Steinssons, he had a good time cycling. Now he will use the free time fully for his real family, becoming a house husband.

Vikkelä Ville

Two riders left Team FL at the end of July. By contrast, it's Suomi youngster Wihlelm Wahlforss who joins the Liechtenstein cycling team.

By now, both Steinsson twins have left Team FL for good. With Arunas Paulauskas and Janis Smedins, two young pavé specialists are already in the team developping well. But still there was room left for another rider, a rider that is able to complete them. This rider is Wilhelm Wahlforss from Helsinki, Finland. Team FL hopes that his nickname Vikkelä Ville (fast Wilhelm) will not leave any doubt about his qualities on the road. Thus, the team management is happy to welcome its latest asset:
